Sunday Sound Side Soiree
Join us for a day of live music featuring two great acts. Local duo Burton Murray kick things off at 3 followed by Derek Smith and The New Day at 5:30.
Burton Murray is Randy Burton and Marc Murray. Randy is a musician working gigs through the US playing guitar, mandolin, slide guitar, and dobro. Marc is a local singer-songwriter whose style is best described as minimalist rock n roll.
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Derek Smith, bassist Kevin Johnson, and drummer/vocalist Alex Clark
Natives of Southeastern Virginia, Derek Smith and cousin Kevin Johnson have been performing live together off and on since their first appearance at The King’s Head Inn in 1992 at age 14 and 15 respectively. Having performed solo and with Kevin and Alex in the award winning and energy-driven band Family Tree, Derek has shared the stage with numerous national and international acts over the years. After releasing many recordings in his musical career, mostly with Family Tree, he released his first solo effort in the winter of 2006. This four-song EP showcases a more intimate side of Smith’s musical and lyrical spectrum and has been widely accepted and acclaimed by people of all ages and musical interests. The fall 2009 release of LIFESIZE, a full-length solo/acoustic album of all original material, gives listeners a chance to take home an accurate representation of what they may hear at one of Derek Smith’s live acoustic performances. With the formation of his trio, Derek Smith and The New Day, a middle ground between the acoustic and electric band sound has been achieved, again opening new doors for a wider fan base and covering more ground in the journey to let the songs and lyrics speak for themselves with the power of band but also a little more breathing room. With the consistent and measured backing of Johnson and Clark as the rhythm section, this ever-evolving group continues to turn heads as they forge their path ahead.
